ECOSAN Waterless
Toilet System

Frequently Asked Questions

The EcoSan waterless toilet is an innovative sanitation solution that does not require water for flushing. It uses a unique dry composting mechanism to process human waste, making it ideal for areas with limited or no access to water, such as remote locations, low-cost housing, mines, military bases, schools, lodges, and hunting camps.

The toilet system operates with a helical screw conveyor mechanism. When waste is deposited, it falls into a vertical chute and enters the conveyor. Every time the toilet lid is lifted, the conveyor rotates slightly, moving the waste along. Over approximately 25 days, the waste travels through the system, drying and deodorizing as it goes, before being collected in a reusable bag. The process reduces the waste to a dry, compost-like material, minimizing odor and volume.

The EcoSan toilet uses a specially designed ventilation pipe to provide airflow, which facilitates the evaporation and dehydration process. This ventilation removes moisture and gases, preventing odour buildup and ensuring an odour-free experience.

It typically takes about six months for the collection bag to fill with dry, odourless waste, depending on usage. The waste is reduced to approximately 5–10% of its original volume due to dehydration, so the frequency of emptying is relatively low.

The dried, compost-like waste can be managed in several ways:

  • Used as a component in making compost for gardening and agriculture.
  • Disposed of through municipal waste services.
  • Used as a potential source of fuel.

The EcoSan system is designed to handle occasional large objects that may accidentally fall into the chute, such as beverage cans or disposable nappies. These items will not block the system, but it is advisable to avoid disposing of non-organic materials in the toilet to ensure optimal performance.

The EcoSan waterless toilet offers several benefits:

  • Water Conservation: No water is needed for flushing, saving thousands of gallons annually.
  • Cost-Effective: Reduces installation and maintenance costs as it does not require plumbing or sewage infrastructure.
  • Eco-Friendly: Converts human waste into a compost-like material that can be reused or safely disposed of, promoting sustainability.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for various settings, especially where water is inaccessible or scarce.

EcoSan toilets are ideal for a wide range of environments, including:

  • Low-cost housing developments.
  • Remote rural areas and communities.
  • Water-stricken regions.
  • Mining and industrial sites.
  • Military bases and field operations.
  • Schools and educational facilities.
  • Lodges, campsites, and hunting camps.

The EcoSan waterless toilet is designed for easy installation and does not require plumbing, water connections, or sewage infrastructure. The system comes with comprehensive installation guidelines and support from our technical team, ensuring a straightforward setup process.

EcoSan toilets are low-maintenance systems. The primary maintenance task involves periodically emptying the collection bag of dry waste. The system is designed to be robust and durable, requiring minimal servicing.

Yes, EcoSan toilets are designed to be safe and hygienic. The dehydration process eliminates harmful pathogens, and the final compost-like material is dry and odorless, making it safe to handle and dispose of.

Due to the design and the non-stick surface of the chute, the human waste falls directly into the processing drum and into the area where the air is extracted. As with any other toilet system, periodic cleaning of the bowl is recommended.

The system is designed so that all odours are extracted through the bowl, processing drum and then out via the extractor pipe and fans/turbine. Two air ventilation systems are available, a wind turbine or a 240/115 Volt A.C. fan.

The system was designed to handle normal amounts of urine. In fact it assists with the removal of odours due to the additional ventilation it causes because of evaporation.

Because the whole process is a dry process there is no need for a septic tank. Temporary storage takes place inside the processing drum until the waste is dropped into the removal bag.

Yes, there are local and International patents registered.

No special maintenance of the toilet system is required. As with all other toilets it is recommended that the bowl is cleaned regularly with a soft brush and some soap or toilet cleaner.

The toilet was designed for use by a family of 8 people

No, a bit of liquid soap or disinfectant and water is enough.
